  Secondhand Tobacco Smoke Exposure in Latin American Countries (Protocol) A protocol from a collaborative study between the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Pan American Health Organization to measure secondhand smoke exposure in public places in Latin America. Countries participating in the study included Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay.The researchers tested samples from 633 locations, which were picked to represent areas where people frequently worked or spent time, such as secondary schools, bars, restaurants, hospitals, city government buildings, and airports. The results of the study were published in the June 9, 2004, issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).
Smoking Behavior, Passive Smoking, and Determinants of Salivary Cotinine Levels: A Study in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (Protocol) A protocol from a collaborative project between the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the National Cancer Institute of Brazil to study the determinants of salivary cotinine levels in active smokers in Rio de Janeiro. The study also provides a framework for estimating the prevalence of passive smoking in the population and allows to evaluate the smoking patterns, knowledge and attitudes concerning the health effects of smoking, and determinants of exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS).
